Illustration

I am not an illustrator, but here is a recent project. The Ebony English School in São Paulo, Brazil, commissioned it. Ebony is a language school for African descendants. So, beyond learning English, the students learn about African culture and its diaspora.

I love the idea! A strong identity is fundamental for personal growth and, therefore, a better life and equality.

So, my concept for their illustration was empowerment by knowledge. I wanted African descendants, most of all the youngsters, to be able to see themselves conquering the world through education. My illustration mentions "The Souls of Black Folks" by the sociologist and doctor William Edward Burghardt Du Bois - or W.E.B. Du Bois - who defended in the early XX century, equal rights for African descendants, Asians, and all minorities. He advocated education and respect for every culture without being forced to assimilate into another culture or be segregated. The illustration also showcases landmarks of some English-speaking nations, like England. It is the mother of all with its London Bridge, the US and its Statue of Liberty, and the Opera House in Australia.

As humans, we are all connected, and as people of African descent, we have to learn more about our roots and advocate for a better Africa. After all, we love the countries where we were born, but we must honor our ancestors' land, as this will bring us pride and make us better people.
